We cruised El Camino this weekend...600 miles to be exact. (this line is funnier to locals of the 408 as El Camino is a popular street to cruise up and down when you are 16 years old....as well as the historic route that the Missionaries took to build all 21 Missions along the California coast). I took Zoe to see Mission Santa Ines in Solvang, CA as she is doing a report on it for school as well as building a small scale model of it. We both took pictures, explored the grounds and the chapel and bought some books in the gift shop. Solvang is a really cute town that in a little Danish Village and all the building are adorable...didn't get any pictures due to it raining the entire time we were there.
Santa Barbara was beautiful as always and we stayed at a great hotel right on Cabrillo Ave at the ocean which took dogs. There was a film festival going on this weekend and there were lots of fun people walking around last night. We had fun too and found ourselves being quite silly and happy and actually skipping down the street together arm in arm! It felt great to feel free and be silly and just let go of.....well- of everything. We shopped on State Street both last night and this morning and Buffy was a big hit everywhere she went. SB loves dogs and everyone stopped us to play and talk with Buffy. We walked her a bunch on her leash, which was great because she was then so tired she slept while we shopped and then later drove the 4 hour drive back home.
Today was Zoe's birthday and she is now 10 years old! We had room service for breakfast in the hotel, then she opened up her present from me (a pink pair on Vans with little black kitties on them and a pair of Ugg Clogs) and then we took a walk on the beach. We followed that up with some shopping for Buffy at a store called Off The Leash and then drove home. Chris came over tonight with a brownie cake that he made for her and we sang her happy birthday, she blew out the candles and then we told her stories about the day she was born and looked at old pictures.
It was another great weekend! I think i spent WAY too much money for a weekend that was about a school project...but what the hell else is worth spending money on? I guess it would have been cheaper if we didn't stay in SB or have room service or raid the mini bar, or go crazy in Nordstrom or the doggie store...but alas...we now know what color the Mission is and what kind of shrubbery surrounds it.
Songs from yesterday's Santa Cruz trip;

We had a great day! A really fun filled day.
Shopping, beach, music, sunsets, dinner, food, friends, fun, puppy.
Meghan showed me two fantastic stores: papervision and bunny's. i love them both. I went crazy at bunny's and bought 3 new tops and and a new yummy red purse. oh yeah, and earrings too. I should probably be saving my money for NY, but this time, for this NY trip I am to try to do more sightseeing and less shopping...last time I think Andrew and I spent at least 3 plus hours in Saks...(he is a true friend to shop with me like that...we went to each and every floor methodically! it was a dream come true and i eventually bought my favorite black LAMB sweater there)...but anyway.....Bunny's was too cool and I instantly fell in love with a million things, so it's really quite an accomplishment that I walked out of there with only 5 things. I was giddy afterwards from the giant spend of money and it was nice to have some instant gratification!
Buffy was great all day long and made friends with everyone who saw her..but especially a hairdresser from idaho falls, id (coincidently buffy's birthplace)....the woman was a little scary, but ahem...idaho falls; need i say more? She started practically making out with Buffy on the street corner and then told a story about how she lets her tiny dog drink out of her mouth when the dog is scared....ummm...yeah.....o-kay. bye bye.
Santa Cruz is always full of wiggers and of course they always like me....quickie mart guy tries to talk me up and make a connection...why does it always have to be the crazy drug addicts that fall for me?
Zoe had a great time and asked why we hadn't gone out with Matt and Meghan before?
Continuing in the tradition that Bengt and I started last year: Here are my Top 10 Bands of 2006. I'd like everyone who reads this to reply and post their own Top 10 list so that we can share great new music. The list can be bands that you personally discovered this past year and not necessarily new to the scene this year. The important thing is that you share them. I wish i had the list from last year...i'll look around and if i have it, i'll post it.

tonight we dressed as pirates. i will come back to this...but first my day:
went to the chinese embassy/consulate in san francisco today after a morning full of meetings and going through a box of tissues (I am still sick). i got lost on the way to the consulate, but figured SF was small enough if i just kept driving one direction or another i would run into one of the two streets i was looking for- Laguna and Geary. i stood in the line from hell to be told abruptly and matter of factly by a woman wearing plastic gloves behind plate glass that i didn't have a passport photo attached to my application. luckily, the consulate does photos on site, but alas.....no cash in my wallet. i had to hike a few blocks to find an atm and then stand in the line from hell again. this time i was told to come back on wednesday, which i believe means i will indeed get my visa. now i only need to pay for my ticket with my newly devised money arranging plan: switched some money to a credit card so i can pay for the ticket....and also think about what to pack....but i will deal with that next week.
After the embassy, i came home to meet my mom and zoe..they had spent the afternoon looking for a particular costume (Barbie Asian Princess in size 7/8 Medium) for a friend and had gone to practically every store in town(this was really rather wonderful of both of them and i love my mommy so much) only to be defeated by the halloween countdown that destroys the selection at all stores. this is very similar to what happens at christmas time as well... as you get closer to the 25th, all that is left in the stores are the crap gifts. In the parking lot of the last store, the halloween super store on el camino, they found a stray dog. my daughter, the do-gooder, insisted on helping it and taking it to the pound even though it was mange-y and patchy, and smelly...so after they took it to the humane society they met me at home.
Now it was time for zoe's thing at school We all looked Freakin Cool. each of us a pirate. zoe's costume was totally the cutest and coolest even though b said wonderful things to me all night about how great i looked...i'm pretty sure he just has a thing for pirates. we totally won the best costume contest, even though we didn't technically win it, but in our hearts we know we are winners. there was this other family trying to bust in on our family costume thing; they were dressed as the incredibles, only their oldest girl child didn't join in (weak!)...this of course, assured us of taking the win for the coolest family costume contest. if this was actually a catagory and if we had actually stayed, i am sure we would have won. We went out to applebees' for dinner in our costumes and pleased many, if not all of the patrons.
